Probabilistic Estimation of Gait Parameters Using Floor Vibrations

Description:

Reference #: 1725

The University of South Carolina is offering licensing opportunities for Probabilistic Estimation of Gait Parameters Using Floor Vibrations.

Background:

Walking parameters are demonstrated to provide insights into a person's health status. Gait parameters can be estimated using wearables such as the Apple Watch. However, these devices are not appropriate for certain populations, such as patients with cognitive decline, because they often forget to wear or charge their devices.

Invention Description:

This technology estimates gait speed and cadence, which are two gait parameters, by measuring the vibrations of the floor. Accelerometers or geophones are installed under or on the floor of a house or building in order to record the vibrations. A computer collects the floor vibrations, and it estimates the gait parameters and their uncertainty.

Potential Applications:

Telehealth and personalized healthcare.

Advantages and Benefits:

This invention enables gait parameter estimation without the need to wear any device. It also negates the need for cameras and vision techniques, which can be perceived by some potential patients to be intrusive
